Coming up… What are your thoughts about Harris County’s new policy “Fair Chance”

Harris County Commissioners adopted a plan last Tuesday from Harris Attorney Christian Menefee to remove barriers for job candidates with criminal histories who apply for positions with the county.

The “Fair Chance Policy” was approved by a vote of 3-2.

The plan bans most Harris County agencies from including questions about criminal history on job applications.

Let us know what you think about this in the comments. Are we going in the correct direction for criminal justice reform or not?

Meet Peter R. Dowdy – We talk Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cryptocurrency and Card Games

In our society, whether we like to admit it or not, it’s almost impossible to become a member of the 1%. Unless you’ve had generational wealth, a brilliant idea (remember that for reference later), or you are a star athlete. And even then, you’ll still face challenges of being accepted into the ‘secret society.’ So as a young black American, sorry to say, our choices are limited, and sometimes they possibly drive us to do the unthinkable. As a high school freshman, I knew I was destined to change the world in a major way but didn’t know how. With entrepreneurial inspiration always around, I had pretty much no excuse of how to make something out of nothing. But where to start? Around this time of the early 2000s, my only venture was bootleg CDs. I knew that wasn’t going to make me millions unless I was selling my OWN music, which at the time, I wasn’t. All I did was play games, but with the games I played, it wasn’t going to make me a millionaire. I loved playing Monopoly, but as others played to understand the philosophy of the real estate and purchasing within the game, I focused on the concept of how the money was made and its function. Think about it! Here we were playing an intense game making fictional purchases of land and businesses and NO ONE was questioning the fact that we were playing with money that we couldn’t use anywhere else. This was made up money and it had a use! Fuck everything else about Monopoly. THAT, that was the key part. It had a use. It wasn’t the normal money we used, but my God, it had a use.

New Texas Gun Law – What you need to know

It’s no secret that support for 2nd amendment has been on steroids over the past decades. We’ve seen gun sales skyrocket, gun violence is on the rise and elected officials push the agenda of the gun lobby. And now, the conservative right along with their leader Gov. Abbott have signed into law, going into effect September 1, 2021 in Texas, HB 1927 that among many other items allow individuals to purchase a firearm, possess it and walk around with the weapon without training. For more on the new law we turn to Daniel Hunt Founder of Last Option Defense a Black Owned Business here in Houston, Tx. Find out more at @last_option_defense on Instagram.

#7MWQP presents Highway Vodka

Highway Vodka is distilled six times. The hemp acts as a super fuel to the yeast performing the conversion from sugars to alcohol, forming a thick layer of hemp oil at the top of the fermenter. The thick layer from the hemp oil leads to a smoother product that has a noticeably different viscosity and mouth feel than other vodkas.

Would you be interested in an interview with Highway’s founder Ben Williams? He comes from a long line of entrepreneurs, including his great-grandmother Lucille B. Smith. She was an African-American culinary pioneer whose friends, fans and customers included Martin Luther King Jr., President Lyndon B. Johnson, First Lady Elanor Roosevelt, heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, and others.
Highway’s lead distiller Codi Fuller, is also the youngest female Black distiller in the country.  Let me know if there’s any interest.

RE:Student Loans to forgive ou pas?

RE:Student Loans to forgive ou pas?

With the newly elected incoming executive administration, more and more Americans are having conversations about a host of progressive ideas and topics ranging from racial injustice, immigration to climate change and we’re barely touching the surface. Student loan forgiveness is on the lips of folks too. A simple search online can drag up many articles and conversations about it. Heck, Moveon.org has an email marketing campaign about it so one wonders is this really going to happen.

Here are a few points to think about:

1) Let’s say if legislation works in the favor of the Democrats and a bill is passed and implemented if the opposition tries to overturn it similar to the Affordable Care Act they might get shut down. Why well look at the fight to overturn the ACA they recently got rejected because it more or less is working and millions of people have are enrolled. You can’t just take it from them.

2) Should the push be for a partial payment given the current economic situation or a full gesture? If there is a partial payment then people might get frustrated remembering how the other companies and industries were bailed in the past few decades including in 2020 and that reality could negatively impact the Left moving forward. We also have to remember that many CEO’s and others walked away with golden parachutes during severe economic downturns. This angered many Americans and we still see it happening today. It always baffles me how none of these multi-million and billion dollar companies do not have any backup cash or “savings”! Hey Man, where is your 6 months of savings?!?!

3) Another interesting idea to consider is does this come with a stipulation? Caveat? Condition? Some service that is none military such as public defenders, teachers, volunteer healthcare workers or something artistic too. Like maybe communication or media related work for non-profits, governmental entities and private.

Look, I don’t have the answers and I’m just an average grade of weed in the dispensary but student loan forgiveness needs to be discussed, our elected officials need to move forward with this and we must hold them accountable.

Meet Major Recording Artist and Rapper Guch

Meet Major Recording Artist and Rapper Guch

“Louisiana native,” Andrea Clay discovered her love for music at the age of 5. Inspired by 2Pac, a liberated and educated thug, she began writing conscious and subconscious lyrics in 95. Throughout her childhood she turned to music like a security blanket and made the studio her safe zone. Initially “Infinity”, the lyrical whiz took on the pseudonym: GUCH.  “Infinity didn’t define me…I mean, the name was cool,  and of course I want my music to be everlasting but when my friends asked me how I was…I always replied ‘I’m Guchhh.’ Meaning..I’m good..nothing bothers me.”

Guch and Q

Digging into her story further, it became evident that in music Andrea really is Guchhh, unbothered. No matter the worries of the world she maintains a constant peace. In spite of familial hardships and unfathomable circumstances, GUCH has remained true to her passion.

When asked about her support system, the list was too vast to be listed.  Of course, her family and friends were mentioned, but she was certain to give all Glory and Honor to God for the privilege to be capable of converting emotions of herself as well as others through music.

Her personality matches her passion.  In her spare time she volunteers and works in her music.  She enjoys working with children with special needs.  This is one artist in tune with what matters.

Big X is a Houston-born aspiring rapper who was raised in Maryland due to some parental situations. He adopts a speed rap style which he affirms to be inspired by Chamillionaire and Joyner Lucas. Notably, both rappers have a distinct reputation for their speedy way of rapping and Big X seems to draw his rap energy from this.

Big X stresses that most people usually liken speed to profanity as most contemporary rap songs sound that way. He intends to go against the rap tide by making his raps profane-free, and this certainly sounds unconventional as most people will consider this a difficult stunt to pull.

However, he’s quite emphatic about not indulging in the profane way of rapping as he wishes to prove to his siblings that he can succeed at rap without indulging in profanity. He is certainly poised for battle against the conventional rap style.

Big X is an advent believer in commitment and discipline as he intends to show friends and family that anything is achievable as long as one can stay dedicated enough to achieve his/her goals. With Big X, anything is quite achievable; this has inevitably kept friends and family in expectant moods as they anticipate his hit song.

Gumbo Session Part 2 – Cultural nuisance, French lessons and thoughts on travel

Gumbo Session Part 2 – Cultural nuisance, French lessons and thoughts on travel

@bootleglikejazz

Cultural nuisance is my description of the conversation between race vs. ethnicity. Why do we use race? Why not ethnicity? Which one reflects our collective cultural identity?

Listen to Gumbo Session Part 2 and dive in with Terrell Wayne as he discusses his thoughts on the topic. Race is as American as baseball, hot dogs and white privilege. Race is an American construct created to oppress and convince the world that black is sub-human. Ethnicity promotes labeling people based on culture, customs and habits.

Traveler vs. Tourist mentality is a school of thought adopted by many people who live, study and travel abroad. Valuing cultural capital over pomp and hype, a Travelers mentality aims to invest in true exchanges amongst foreign cultures. Travelers benefit from authentic cuisine from the stoves of locals, experiences in spaces that are relevant to the natives and a different perspective.

Roberto Carlos Garcia – Black Maybe, Afro-Dominican Roots and Casta | Q – Haiti, the Dominican Republic and and musings on travel

Poet, storyteller, and essayist Roberto Carlos Garcia is a self-described “sancocho […] of provisions from the Harlem Renaissance, the Spanish Poets of 1929, the Black Arts Movement, the Nuyorican School, and the Modernists.”

Get Fresh Books LLC and Červená Barva Press

Poet, storyteller, and essayist Roberto Carlos Garcia is a self-described “sancocho […] of provisions from the Harlem Renaissance, the Spanish Poets of 1929, the Black Arts Movement, the Nuyorican School, and the Modernists.” Garcia is rigorously interrogative of himself and the world around him, conveying “nakedness of emotion, intent, and experience,” and he writes extensively about the Afro-Latinx and Afro-diasporic experience. His second poetry collection, black / Maybe, is available from Willow Books.  Roberto’s first collection, Melancolía, is available from Červená Barva Press.

Midnight Navy is a producer, saxophonist, and singer-songwriter based in Austin, Texas. His musical style ranges from psychedelic alternative to bedroom pop and synth wave with elements of lo-fi hip-hop. His unique musical lens draws from his Mexican heritage, along with his love for pop culture and feel good melodies.

Born and raised by Mexican parents in Corpus Christi, Texas, Midnight Navy is driven by everyday novelties, cultures, landscapes, and people. At the age of 14, he relocated to Phoenix, Arizona where he continued developing his musical taste. With those experiences, his affinity for music grew drastically as he taught himself to produce and sing on his own records. After a few years of experimenting with different sounds and musical ideologies, the moniker ‘Midnight Navy’ was created in late 2016. Two years later, Midnight Navy’s self-titled EP was released as a deep dive into his new experiences moving back to his home state of Texas.

The Gumbo Session – Juneteenth, Lee P. Brown, Chapultepex Club and Charles Law

Terrell Wayne a.k.a. Q in the studio

This is the gumbo session – a mix of current events, topics I’m passionate about and random ideas I’ve been working on. In this episode I talk about former Mayor Lee P. Brown, the Chapultepex Club of the Houston Y.W.C.A., Howard Law and the history behind Juneteenth.

What Juneteenth around the corner I treated this episode of the Gumbo session as a 2nd Black history month. Here in Texas, Juneteenth is a big deal and every June feels like another Black history month.
